dAlert - Windows Desktop dA Notifier! (alpha) by pandoramail dAlert - Windows Desktop dA Notifier! (alpha) by pandoramail
Hi there! Today, on my birthday I wanted to share with you a little side project that I started not so long ago while I was learning how to code. This little thing on which I was working a bit in my free time is called dAlert and is meant to provide quick and clean notifications whenever an artist on the list you provide uploads a deviation or a journal.

I'm writing about it today as I wanted to get some basic feedback from you guys - there's no point in developing an app if there's no userbase, right? :) So - if you're interested in what you see (or not!) and want to suggest / ask about anything (or tell me why it's a bad idea and you WON'T use it) - go ahead! It's just a small little app and dA API sucks balls, so don't expect wonders, please. I'm just trying to figure out if there's a need for this thing at all.

Peace!

Whoa this is so cool, I personally feel that it would be much better if you could make it able to manage multiple dA accounts just like tweetdeck :D

Can't wait for the launching of the program... :D

Happy birthday! :D
I personally use the Chrome extension DA notifier, but a desktop App might be nice :D

What I'm personally really mission is a decent Android App.

Thanks. :)
Yeah, dA browser extension is pretty neat, the only downside is that you have to have a browser running constantly (not a real problem) and if you want to observe only the selected few for new deviations (and know if they posted something immediately) it gets kind of cluttered. Hm, an Android App would be sweet, I don't know why their API doesn't allow much freedom to play with, an app like that would be out there in no time.

Personally I'd probably only want such a thing to notify me when I have a note in my box. Any chance of adding that function?

Oh, I wanted to implement something like that myself from the beginning but it seems that dA isn't really open to data exchange on that level and the overall message center integration is close to none. To display notes there would need to be a browser running silently in the background (hidden?), and there would have to be some fishy browser via javascript to application shenanigans. Unless dA opens up a little their message center there's nothing much I can do with notes unfortunately.

Interested definatly, but, no adware? and also being able to select a couple of users you follow?

Absolutely no adware, open source (for all technical users to improve and validate it as non-spyware).

And I had this in mind - messages on dA are quite good, but are cluttered as hell (10,000 deviations in stack?) - we do watch a lot of people but dA does not have a "priority" setting. This little app starts with a blank list to which a user can add only those deviants he or she wants to have desktop alerts for, with different settings for deviations and journals. So you can have over 1000 watched deviants on dA but only three / five / any number you like of users that you actually receive notifications for.

Is it going to slow down an older computer? are you testing this that way? Last note before I share farther then my favorites? Hey anyother Question... Can you put Deviants not on your friends list on this? Just curious

Right now I'm not testing it on an old machine, but I certainly will do that (tests will be done on 500Mhz CPU with 512MB Ram). It shouldn't slow down the PC too much - it would do a periodical check on set amount of time, so no constant CPU load. As for deviants that are not on your watch list - of course. You could put any deviant you like on the list without even once visiting their page, the only thing you need to provide for this app is their user name.
